Bread of Life
To help people connect to Jesus as the Bread of Life, we constructed a cross with sides forming a kind of cross-shaped box. Into this we laid four long loaves of French bread. This was a focal point during the service and when the time came for communion, we invited people to come forward, take a piece of bread directly from the cross, reading the words, “the body of Christ, broken for you.” Then they knelt at a cross on the platform, dipped the bread in a chalice at the foot of the cross reading the words, “The blood of Christ, shed for you.” For a follow up service focusing on the suffering of Jesus, we left the torn bread in the cross surrounded by red candles as a vivid image of Jesus’ torn body. Toward the end of the service we invited people to come forward and drip red wax on the bread as a way of connecting with Jesus’ suffering for us.
